What is Recapitulation in Endodontics?

Recapitulation in endodontics is a process used during a root canal procedure to ensure the root area is cleaned out thoroughly and free of debris. A root canal is when the pulp or soft tissue inside the root canal is inflamed or infected. This infection is caused by injury, bacteria, a crack, or decay. Root canals are performed to help restore a tooth’s function.

There are symptoms of root canals that may indicate something is wrong. In some cases, patients may not have any symptoms at all. Attending regular exams and cleaning appointments in our office are extremely important to ensure your teeth and mouth are healthy and free of infection. If an infection is left untreated, an abscess can form, and this can lead to other serious issues such as tooth loss. Symptoms That May Indicate You Need a Root Canal

• Pain in or around a tooth.

How Does Recapitulation Work?

During a root canal procedure, the inflamed tissue is cleaned out and removed. Throughout this process, debris can collect in the canal, and if not removed this can cause inflammation and pain. Special smaller instruments are used to help clean out any debris generated during the procedure, along with biologic cleansing agents to help rinse away the debris. The smaller instruments can create a smooth and unclogged root canal preventing any blockages. The goal is to gently loosen and remove any debris without causing harm to the root canal.

Once the root canal is complete the area is sealed and filled. A crown is then placed over the tooth to restore the tooth’s functionality. Root canals can help save teeth and recovery is minimal. Patients may experience some pain or sensitivity after their root canal procedure, but this should subside after a few days. Staying on top of oral hygiene can help to keep your teeth clean and free of bacteria. We recommend patients pay extra attention to the root canal area, and gently floss and brush around the tooth to ensure any plaque is removed.
